Do you remember your mother quizzing you, expecting certain answers to questions? I sure do. It was meant to see if I did as I was told, or if I went somewhere I wasn’t supposed to, would that sneakiness creep into my facial expression or make my voice change. All mothers have that way about them.
My own kids say, “you have The Look.” The Look was (evidently) even more effective than a question. I got my answer just by watching them, how their eyes would shift, the collapse of their mouths signaling, “aw, I’ve been caught!”
Sometimes my questions were meant to feel them out, see what they really thought about a plan or idea, so I could come to some sort of decision, and I would ask in a roundabout way, not hinting at the truth behind the asking.
Dixie is in this sort of predicament, feeling that Mama’s questions are a bit of a trap. No matter what answers she or her brother give, it will likely affect their future.
CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE
Everything had been going great until Mama started asking me and AJ insinuating questions.

Mine too, Lilac! So funny. Mother’s never change, do they? FYI, it’s possible we’ll lose power here. There’s an expectation of LOTS of RAIN (I’ve seen everything from 7.5 inches up to 12 inches.) And there will be WIND – tropical force, meaning downed trees/powerlines. And it could be days before it’s back on.

Those insinuating questions always reach a new level after the cops leave, don’t they? They at least always seem more poignant in my memories.
You never know where a storm will go until it has gone by but I don’t think you will have much trouble. The odd eye wall this one has tells me it will just continue to weaken. Be careful though.
When is that Oprah interview again?

The storm…this is true what you say. I hope you’re right. We just had an historic rain here about a week ago, so the ground is saturated. And predictions are wind gusts 30-40/40-50. I sure hope they’re wrong.

Oh, I can so relate to your build-up leading into the opening sentence. My grandfather had The Look. My mom had The Look. My dad? He had The Phrase.

Ha! My mother could cock one eyebrow and bring her three miscreants into line without uttering a word. Failure to heed the brow ended in an immediate display of parental superiority. The brow– *shudders* –I’m still earning it on a semi-routine basis.
My facial muscles won’t cooperate or The Brow would certainly have been in my repertoire! 😉
Just a note to let you know that you are high in our thoughts. Hope it was just you electricity that got blown away and that you are safe and comfortable with plenty of food and water.
