First Sentence Friday!

Working our way right along, yes this week will yield another short sentence.

Here’s the thing.  When I prepared these posts and looked to see what sentences would come each week, even I wanted to share MORE with you.  But.  I won’t.  Rules are rules.  🙂

CHAPTER TEN

Things were different with me and Mama.

  1. This feels like the curtain coming up on the next act. With all the news right now, it feels terribly *present* too. “Things were different in Britain …”

    1. Ha! It did come through! Sometimes WordPress is slow. Having said that… isn’t that the truth? GB is out of the EU. I wonder (aside from what we hear) it will mean.

    1. Wow, Colin. I almost feel like you’re working for a NY publishing house! Here’s something interesting. I just read an article in Writer’s Digest which talked about opening lines, and it was along the same thread of thought as yours!

  2. Oh, isn’t this delicious!

First, apologies, I’ve had clients in town for days, breakfast through whatever you call waaaaay past dinner when the bartender says, “No, you’re not getting a last call” and I’m exhausted!

But that line. So much packed in. Reminds me of the classic opener from Flannery O’Connor, “The grandmother didn’t want to go to Florida” because there are soooooo many unanswered questions, but not an infinite amount. A finite number that we can list and wonder about. It drives the reader, zero to sixty, into the next sentence, which … you’re not giving us. Wow, on a scale of one to evil, you’re a 12.

    1. I know what you mean! (about busyness) Last weekend it seemed never ending. Everything was fun, but by Tuesday, I was pooped. If only I could have drank more…like you apparently. 🙂 It started with a wedding (ha, I originally typed weeding, which might have fit just as well – weed out all those old girlfriends/boyfriends). That was at 11:00, then, I had an event in Raleigh, which meant I couldn’t really relax after the wedding. I had to leave at 5:00 to be sure I was in place by 6:30. I got home around 9:00. AND…we had the “kids” over for Sunday dinner, which meant, get up and get to cooking. Monday I went to Raleigh to help my Mom, who was in a non-stop cleaning frenzy on the apartment she rents to college students.

Did I make you tired describing all that?

Thank you for your kind words! I’ll take a comparison to Flannery O’Connor ANY day! And funny you mention that sentence. Someone brought it up this week. Somewhere. I swear I just read it in a magazine article or something. That’s like karma!

Evil of 12? I’ll take that too!
