Reflection

You realize, it’s almost over.  You know, 2012?  Are you done shopping?  Are the gifts all wrapped and under the tree?  Did you forget anyone on the list??  Will you get what you want?

It’s almost the end of a year, and for many, that’s a signal, a time for reflection.  I’m taking a pause here to think back on where I’ve been, what I’ve done and where I’m going.  Actually, maybe more like where I THINK I’m going.

Many analogies have been made about life being like a book.  It’s been written about in songs or articles, and used in discussions.  There are lyrics about pages turned, or words written or spoken and they all elude to chapters beginning or ending.  Being a writer, I’ve always liked that, but there were times this past year when I wished I could have skipped certain chapters.

Lord knows, there was good and bad thrown into the mix.  As you may know, if you’ve been reading my posts, my job at Nortel, my two beloved dogs, Bella and Kiwi, and my aunt who had Downs Syndrome, sadly, are all closed chapters in my personal book.  I only have pictures and memories to hold on to and to keep close.  These losses were heavy, dark and in some cases, completely unexpected.

But, life is about balance and for all those chapters ending came the new chapters, or the continued pursuit in reading the ones partially finished.   For instance, there was the welcoming of a new member of the family, (see last post “And Now We Are Three…”), and the ongoing and steadfast hope for publication, the receipt of my first rejections from agents before I acquired one.  I learned to better use social media and I grew my Twitter followers.  I kept up with this blog, going from posting once a month, to once a week.   I grew a thicker skin and I finished a second book.   Not bad, right?

Now, here I am.  It’s December 11, exactly two weeks before Christmas and less than three weeks before another new year begins.  In spite of myself, I remain optimistic, a glass half full sort of person.  I look forward to 2013 and whatever rolls around the corner when it gets here.  In the meantime, what I have on the immediate radar is to continue working on the third book while tossing around the idea of getting back into yoga.  Oh, and most importantly… wishing that all of you are happy and content as this year comes to a close, that your stockings are filled, and that the presents you want are under the tree.

Merry Christmas!

  1. Hum. How did you jack up twitter? And is it people who might buy your book? Happy holidays to you as well.

    1. I follow writers, editors, agents …some follow back…others don’t. some might buy the book – others I doubt, but I am pretty discerning as to who I follow. I’ve got about 890…and am hardly ever out there to be honest. I can’t see sitting and staring at Twitter comments all day. I wrote a comment on a site once – and said that a Twitter comment lasts about as long as a drop of water on asphalt on a ninety some degree day. That ticked off a few folks, but it’s the truth. Not sure I see the validity in it, but I’ve read that writers (hope to be authors) should have an “online” presence. Hence the blog and Twitter.

  2. You aren’t – I don’t see how you really get any value – if you aren’t staring at it constantly, how do you know if someone you actually WANT to see a tweet from sent it? I mean, the more you follow, the more tweets you get and the less likely you can spot it. When I send out a tweet – within seconds about 80 others can come in over the top of mine. Maybe I’m stupid – but until someone can tell me how to “cherry pick” the ones I care about, then I don’t get it…so no, you AIN’T the only one!
