Now on to this week’s sentence for THE MOONSHINER’S DAUGHTER. (December 31, 2019, Kensington)

Oral Sasser is Jessie’s first cousin, (what we call “kissing cousins,” in the South) son of her Uncle Virgil and Aunt Juanita. He’s the same age as Jessie’s brother, Merritt. The relationship he has with his father is tenuous, and usually erupts into some sort of physical violence. While Merritt has great respect for his Daddy, Oral is often times either sullen, or fearful. Uncle Virgil doesn’t think twice about slapping the kid around because he has a propensity for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. In one particular scene, he thinks he’s one upped Jessie. He crows about it, and once again, finds himself in trouble.

Oral didn’t come back that night, or the next day.
