It’s hard to believe that almost seven years ago my debut novel was published. This was a book I never thought would sit on bookshelves in bookstores, much less be read by anyone other than myself and my agent.
I always tell readers this is one of my toughest stories to read – actually, I think it is my toughest because it’s written graphically. You will either love it – or hate it. There seems to be very little middle ground when it comes to reader opinions on this. I think what makes people love it is Dixie has a winning voice, a voice my agent called “remarkable.” (yes, after all this time I remember that. ????) What makes some hate it is what happens to Dixie and how it’s written.
Either way, I hope you’ll give Dixie a chance to tell her story. Mary O’Malley of Anderson’s Bookshop in Napier, IL, said, “This debut novel is a page-turner from the very beginning. I discovered The Education of Dixie Dupree in Target. I browse their books like I’m at the library. When I got home it was the first one I read. It was heartbreaking beautiful and while at times difficult to read, I found her voice to be triumphant and extraordinary. I hugged that book when I was finished it. I then sent it off to a friend with a note saying “You have to read this book now. It’s difficult but keep reading”. I told everyone about this book describing it as a must read. An amazing debut and yes, a story that needed to be told.
Thank you SO much for not only reading Dixie but for also sharing her sad, yet triumphant story with others. I too, felt it was a story that needed to be told. I am thankful for the readers, like you, who understood her.
